A busy week after being on vacation and so just a couple links:

Comentario

Recuerdo esta película porque me impresionó cuando la vi por primera vez. Era un niño y poco a poco iba viendo gracias a la TV clásicos como "el enigma de otro mundo", "la invasión de los ultracuerpos", "la mosca", etc...Ésta es otra joya del celuloide que me hizo reafirmar mis gustos por la ciencia-ficción y el terror inteligente.

Roger Corman contrató para este film a un Ray Milland cincuentón, con su carrera en fase de decadencia, pero a fin de cuentas un excelente actor que había logrado un óscar 20 años atrás por su papel de alcoholico en "Días sin huella", de Billy Wilder.

La presente historia parte de un argumento del interesante escritor Ray Russell, quien lo guioniza al lado de Robert Dilloni consiguiendo una historia más que intersante y creíble. Aquí no tenemos el clásico científico loco, de mirada desquiciada y que maneja extraño instrumental, sino un hombre que trabaja en un objetivo que cree que mejorará la especie humana al tiempo que tiene una prometida con la cual asiste a fiestas ocasionales. Este hábitat diario, familiar, se ve turbado cuando el profesor Xavier efectúa un experimento sobre sí mismo y poco a poco comienza a percibir los cambios en él, algo similar a lo acontecido en la película El increíble hombre menguante (The Incredible Shrinking Man, 1957), de Jack Arnold. Al inicio, todo parece incluso divertido, pues en la referida fiesta puede ver a todos los invitados desnudos, con el consiguiente regodeo, en un sentido y otro, por su parte. Sin embargo, la mutación va adquiriendo de manera paulatina connotaciones más pesadillescas, hasta sumergir a nuestro protagonista en una espiral de horror.

Una hermosa fotografía del gran Floyd Crosby y una interpretación muy sólida, eficaz y torturada por parte de Ray Milland son los otros alicientes de esta simpática y grata película que, con todo, se queda muy por debajo de lo que hubiera podido ser. En definitivas cuentas, una película de culto del inolvidable Corman, que logra una inquietante atmósfera de misterio y pesadilla.

Facebook Hits 1 Billion Monthly Active Mobile Users Milestone Posts Strong Q3 Results

Facebook easily topped estimates for revenue and profit for its third quarter, but faced signs of worry from investors that the company’s growth is slowing down.

The company continued its impressive growth streak, reporting $7 billion (roughly Rs. 46,699 crores) in revenue in a quarter for the first time, which topped the expectations of most analysts who predicted the social media giant would generate $6.92 billion. Even more surprising, the company’s profits were much better expected with earnings $1.07 per share versus an expected 97 cents.

But even these pleasant surprises didn’t seem to cheer investors. After closing at $127.17, Facebook shares tumbled more than 2.7 percent immediately after the report in after-hours trading. The stock soon made a modest recovery and was just about even with the market close by the company’s earnings call with investors around 5pm.

Some of the sell-off may have been because Facebook’s revenue grew 56 percent year-over-year – a slightly slower pace than what the company had reported in the past. Last quarter, the social network reported it had grown 59 percent from the same time the previous year.

Still, Facebook is strong on the fundamentals of its business. The company continues to build its user base, particularly on mobile devices. The company said that this quarter, for the first time in its history, it had more than one billion monthly active mobile users.

Facebook now gets 84 percent of its advertising revenue from mobile devices, a critical metric in an increasingly wireless age. Overall, Facebook said it now has about 1.8 billion monthly active users.

Of course, the social network is just a part of what Facebook does. The tech firm made it clear that it has its eye on a much broader and longer timeline. “We had another good quarter,” said Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg in a statement. “We’re making progress putting video first across our apps and executing our 10 year technology roadmap.”

The company is sinking lot of investment into video, both through ad technology and its recent push to get users and businesses to live-stream events through its network.

That hasn’t been a completely smooth road. The company recently admitted that it had miscounted video traffic in a way that could have inflated views by as much as 60 to 80 percent, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal last month. Facebook has since corrected its error. But the problem stunned the advertising world.

Long-term investments from Facebook range from its virtual reality Oculus Rift headset, to its continued build-out of WhatsApp and other messaging programs, to its fleet of drones that provide Internet access to rural areas around the world.

Some analysts warned that it will take time for Facebook’s many projects to pay off.

“We are nervous on the short-term outlook for Facebook as market estimates are assuming that revenues materialize from the new ecosystem services long before we see them as being mature enough to generate revenue,” said Richard Windsor, an analyst at Edison Investment Research in a note to investors. “We remain short-term cautious on Facebook despite the fact that it has a lot of long term potential. There will be a better time to get in.”

Facebook Javascript SDK Security error Permission denied in IE while login

Facebook platform is really not friendly with IEs browsers and Im sure that a lot of developers have many difficulties in IE while working with Facebook. Recently Ive faced a troubles in IE7 and IE8 while calling method FB.login(); Authentication popup appears but after that security error popup is shown with text like:

In other browsers everything works fine. There is a hack that allows to avoid this error in IE. It is necessary to add some piece of code after calling FB.init() on client side:

Earth Day Craft Bottle Cap Necklaces

Here is a cute Craft that my Sister-in-law, Jodi made with her daughter. I asked her to post about since it is Recycle-ish and she was kind enough to share her project with us. Thanks Jodi!

Bottle Cap Necklaces (or just magnets)

Here is a fun little craft to make for any jewelry loving little girls in your life! They are really easy and it is fun to make a bunch at once. My daughter wanted to make them for all her friends. Make a bunch and give them as a gift!

Here are the supplies you need:

Bottle caps (you can buy these in bulk for pretty cheap, look online)
Small washers
SUPER strong magnets
Craft Glue
Something to put the washer on for your necklace (I found this big bag of nylon loops at hobby lobby for a couple of bucks)
Diamond Glaze
Whatever picture or design you choose to put in the bottle cap

I used a photo program to create whatever I wanted to put in the bottle caps.

Once you have them cut out and fit to size use craft glue to adhere the paper to the bottle cap.

Then comes the diamond glaze. This stuff is pretty cool. It just makes a glass like layer on whatever you put it on. Make sure you DONT shake the bottle, you dont want bubbles in there-they are really hard to get off of your image once you pour it.

It doesnt take much to cover the paper. It comes out cloudy and dries clear. If you do get a bubble in there...good luck getting it out! One thing that occasionally worked for me was to use a straight pin to try and pop it or use it to scoot the bubble to the side and slide it out of the bottle cap.

Once you have your image covered you can add a little bling if you like. These small acrylic jewels are perfect. Now let your bottle caps sit and dry where no little fingers can poke at them.

Okay, here is where your SUPER strong magnets come in. You have to make sure they are really strong or they will get bumped off the necklace. Use your favorite type of super glue to attach the magnent to the back of the bottle cap.

Hook your washer onto your necklace.

The magnent should have a good strong hold to the washer and now it is ready to wear and be changed over and over!

Once you have a nice little collection you can make a cute magnent frame to hold all your bottle caps til they are ready to be worn.

DVCS Im sold

As a casual reader of DVCS advantages like git and mercurial, I think I am ready. Motivated by a great article shared by Kit Plummer, I am sold and ready to start using it. Unfortunately, its probably not going to happen any time soon at work until a) IT supports a mercurial server like they do svn or b) I start a new project were new decisions like language (ruby/groovy) and source control can be made and Im not hindered by "we are already using svn, why switch" or "I just got comfortable with svn" or "every team member would have to learn mercurial". Reminds me of my favoriate Zed Shaw quote from this article:

"This folks is the classic problem with programmers today. They absolutely refuse to learn anything new unless they can see that learning the new hotness will give them an immediate 200% boost in salary or get them hot honeys at the next conference."

Now that I see that Hudson has a mercurial plugin and Jira does as well, then technically speaking, I cant think of any other reason not to switch.

Escape from Pirates Island Walkthrough starts here:
You start the Pirate Island escape from the beach leisure area.

Look in the sand at the right edge of the blanket. Take the blue sea star.

Go right

Take the white pen from the grass, bottom left area.
Take the bone from, the red ground.
Zoom in on the bone, open it, then take the token.
Take the spade on the statue.
Take some fruit from the tree above the statue.

Zoom in on the tree on the bottom right.
Give the fruit to the blue birdie.
The bird will fly away, now you can take another token.

Go back left.

Zoom in on the area just right of the cave entrance
Use the pin to lift the rock

Take the brown box.

Zoom into the bush, just right of this rock you lifted.

Take the knife and hammer

Zoom into the bush just left of the cave opening
Use the knife to retrieve the underwater token.

Go right

Zoom in on the dirt just below the statue
Use the spade to lift the rock

Take the brown box.

Go right to the pirate ship

Zoom in on the red crab, move the crab, take the token.
Take the orange and pink stars on the left side.
Zoom in on the steering wheel far in front, then take the token from it.

Zoom in and open the floor panel just left of the mast pole.

Take the brown box.

Zoom in on the sealed barrel
Use the hammer to take the nails out

Take the 4th brown box.

Zoom in on the door below the steering wheel
Insert the 3 colored stars
The door will open. Enter the Pirate Captains Cabin.

Open the chest and take the 5th brown box.
Take the tablecloth from under the candle
Zoom in on the painting and take a token
Take the key from the top shelf
Open the dressing table drawer with this key. Take the 6th brown box and pink star inside.

Zoom in on the brown boxes
Insert the 6 tokens. (Hint: each token has a specific spot, so keep trying different boxes until each token fits)

Take the 6 pieces inside the boxes.

Look at the tablecloth.

You should recognize this from the 1st scene.
Go out and all the way left.

Zoom in on the cave door.
Insert the pink star into the door.
Insert the 6 pieces

Your boat will drift down and you will escape!
