sinopsis:

En un pueblecillo de una región pantanosa, un furtivo dispara contra una extraña criatura con ventosas, dándola por muerta, pero al poco es atacado y fallece con misteriosas marcas en su cuerpo. El sheriff local no se toma demasiado interés en el asunto, pero un representante de la ley forastero que está sirviendo en el lugar decide investigar.

Comentario



Destinada en un principio a exhibirse como complemento de la comedia negra de Roger Corman, “A Bucket Of Blood” (1959), esta típica película de monstruos de la AIP, que reunió a los hermanos Corman en las tareas de producción, es un ejemplo arquetípico del material más psicotrónico de la American International Pictures, capaz de combinar el estilo del mas descarado “cine de lo inútil” con los inocentes y grotescos monstruos propios de la casa. En este caso, la acción presenta a un puñado de sanguijuelas humanoides del Profundo Sur de los USA, que acechan a sus víctimas en los pantanos de la región, con la esperanza de matarlas (de risa, cabe suponer, ante la visión de su ridículo traje de trapo), y sorberles a continuación el fluido vital. La historia, escrita por el también actor Leo Gordon, arranca cuando, en un comienzo que envidiaría el propio Russ Meyer, un grosero barman descubre que su esposa (la sexy Yvette Vickers) le pone los cuernos con el guapo Michael Emmett. Inmediatamente, se los lleva al pantano a punta de escopeta, dejándolos a merced de las sanguijuelas gigantes.
A pesar de lo que pueda parecer, la galería de típicos y repelentes personajes de “gótico sureño” anima el cotarro. Tanto o más que los monstruos de peluche, gracias a la participación de actores tan característicos como Bruno Ve Sota (el malvado barman) o Ken Clark.
Considerada como una de las más baratas producciones de Corman (lo que ya es decir), “Attack of the Giant Leeches”, también distribuida como “The
Giant Leeches” a secas, ejemplifica por lo demás una de las grandes virtudes de las series B y Z de la época: su duración, que es de solo 62 minutos. ¿Alguien da más en tan poco tiempo?
