sinopsis
Durante un vuelo experimental en el espacio, un astronauta desobedece las órdenes de su base. Sufre un desmayo, pierde el control de la nave, y es a duras penas rescatado. En un segundo vuelo, vuelve a incumplir las instrucciones recibidas… y esta vez las consecuencias serán más graves. De hecho, serán “monstruosamente ” graves…

Mientras que en la película de Val Guest el punto de atención era científico, serio, épico... a pesar del carácter agrio del amigo Quatermass, en este caso nos presenta una "monster movie" atípica en su desarrollo. Podríamos dividirla en tres partes: una primera en la que se desarrollan los personajes y sus relaciones entre ellos (el piloto de pruebas y su jefe son dos hermanos que se llevan francamente mal). Vamos, un tostón.
El segundo bloque es la historia propiamente dicha donde por un lado el monstruo va mutando poco a poco, a la par que hace destrozos por doquier (aunque se le ve poco, la verdad); por otro el protagonista, hermano del piloto, que se dedica a investigar (con bastante más efectividad que la policía) y a hacer conjeturas a espuertas, con la inestimable ayuda de un científico especialista en medicina espacial, en astronomía y en todo lo que le echen, que se tira media película dando la brasa con unos dichosos rayos cósmicos, consigue esclarecer todo el misterio a la vez que le quita la novia a su hermano desaparecido.
Para rematar, la película da un vuelco y en vez de un apoteósico final repleto de sangre (con destrucción del engendro incluída), nos muestra un ser monstruoso que necesita ayuda y regresa a pedirla. Se ahonda en la soledad y la tragedia personal de ese piloto convertido en horror andante. Y es eso lo que la hace atípica de cualquier "monster movie", ese enfoque más psicológico. Obviando claro está la ridícula torpeza del monstruo (fijaos como mientras baja unas escaleras, resbala y casi se mata) que mientras se desplaza abre y cierra las manos como los niños cuando dicen adiós.
Serie B muy modesta (rodada con cuatro duros) para aficionado al género. Por cierto, el traje del monstruo está curioso.

En 1973, una nave espacial llega a Marte para averiguar qué aconteció con una expedición anterior: sólo hallan al capitán, y el resto de la dotación ha desaparecido. Acusado de matar a sus compañeros, el hombre es apresado y conducido de regreso a la Tierra. Pero antes de despegar de Marte, una criatura se cuela en el interior de la nave y, a lo largo del viaje, comienza a diezmar a la tripulación…

Comentario:
Todos los libros de cine citan a esta película como una de las más claras y diáfanas influencias para Alien, el octavo pasajero (Alien, 1979) de Ridley Scott -la otra influencia cinematográfica suele ser Terror en el espacio/Terrore nello spazio (1965), de Mario Bava-.
Cuando se abordó la presente producción resulta evidente qué otra fuente estaba en mente de sus responsables: El enigma… de otro mundo (The Thing… from another World, 1951), de Christian Nyby y Howard Hawks. En este caso, a la claustrofobia de ambientación que suponía una base en el Polo Norte se reemplaza con la muy superior que constituye una nave espacial vagando en la inmensidad del espacio. Este cambio de escenario, por supuesto, supone un cambio en la forma de desarrollar la historia, los trucos ambientales y narrativos…, y las soluciones que le aporta el guionista fueron muy tenidas en cuenta por los responsables del libreto del film de Ridley Scott, a tal punto que más que de influencia cabe casi citar la palabra "plagio". Bien es cierto que la presente es una producción pobre, y que Alien supera a esta en cualidades intrínsecas, pero no es menos cierto la base evidente que supone el presente trabajo, que debiera al menos haberse citado en los créditos fílmicos de la segunda (las influencias de Terror en el espacio, si bien evidentes, son mucho menos abundantes y acusadas).
Al tratarse de una producción de serie B, la falta de medios ha de suplirse por imaginación y sugerencia. Otras películas de la época fallaban al cubrir esas limitaciones con una interminable verborrea -con diálogos no precisamente propios de un Mankiewicz- y unas escasas escenas de acción. En este caso no sucede así: el film es conciso, breve y directo; no hay tiempo para el aburrimiento. Edward L. Cahn, director con pésima fama, desarrolla la narración por medio de la creación de atmósferas, enseñando poco al monstruo -con todo, de superior factura a lo habitual en la época-, ocultándolo mediante contraluces, gases e iluminación tenue. Ello consigue que el film sea un vibrante y divertido ejercicio de estilo, con cierto tono terrorífico muy bien conseguido en los acechos continuos de la criatura a los viajeros de la nave. Así, cabe resaltar un magistral momento en el cual uno de los tripulantes va en busca de una víctima por el tubo de aireación de la nave y la encuentra agonizante y con una expresión demacrada, de inmensas ojeras, para verse atacado por el monstruo que acecha en algún lugar de los corredores.
En suma: Alien es una obra maestra de la temática; este precedente, sin alcanzar tan altos logros, es una buena -realmente buena- película de género per se que, además, tiene el mérito de haber servido de origen a uno de los clásicos modernos.

The Orbiter’s approach is seven times steeper and twice as fast compared to a commercial airliner’s approach. Also, because during descent it is an unpowered glider, you only have one chance to get it right.
