Elderflower and Honey Glazed Donut Holes

Elderflower and Honey Glazed Donut Holes

Guys, I'm gonna be honest with you: after baking those citrus cornmeal cupcakes, I haven't come near my oven since. I'm still a little bit scarred by how much of massive downgrade my new oven is. The thought of baking a cake, or really, anything, just makes me a little bit depressed.

But today is NATIONAL DONUT DAY. And thankfully, you don't need to use an oven to make donuts, nope. Just some flour, sugar, a cast iron skillet and a crap-ton of oil, and VOILA! One of the best treats known to man:

Okay, technically, these are donut holes, I know, I know. Silly me decided that my donut cutter wasn't worth bringing to San Francisco, and decided to pack it away in storage back in Portland (what a mistake that was!). And here's something even worse that might actually disqualify these from National Donut Day — they're not even made with yeast. Hey! Cut me some slack — on the weekend I made these, I was headed to New York City for Saveur Magazine's Best Food Blog Awards ceremony. Ain't got no time to sit around and wait for yeast to rise, nope. So instead, I used a hacky, brilliant quickbread recipe from the deep annals of my recipe archive that yields buttermilk donut holes with a tender, open crumb and a crispy, golden exterior.

And while each donut hole was still warm, I dunked them in a glaze made of healthy portions of local honey and St. Germain, an elderflower liqueur. If you haven't tasted elderflower before, I highly recommend it —  elderflowers come from the same family as honeysuckle and have a wonderfully fruity, and almost lychee-like flavor. But be warned! There's a generous amount of St. Germain in the glaze, so these donuts would make for a boozy breakfast treat. Especially when paired with champagne. I may or may not be speaking from experience.

And a big thanks to always lovely and adorable Melissa of The Faux Martha for rounding us fine blogging guys and gals up for National Donut Day. For more donut recipes, be sure to check out our National Donut Day site and the hashtag #nationaldonutday!

Some baker's notes:
  • Donuts are almost often made with a bread dough, which is usually risen with yeast. Quickbread recipes, on the other hand, usually aim to yield the same type of texture as a yeast-leavened good, but use baking powder or baking soda as a leavening agent instead. And while this recipe is awesome because it takes around 15 minutes to come together (as to my standby brioche donut recipe, in which the dough needs to be chilled for around 3 hours), it does mean that the donut holes go stale faster because quickbreads really don't keep as well as yeasted ones. These are best fresh and still warm from the fryer, and tend to get soggy and stale the longer they sit around.

  • Remember that you don't need a deep fryer to make donuts. I actually have a deep fryer, but prefer to use a cast iron skillet to fry donuts since I feel like it's safer and easier to clean. Make sure your pot is deep enough to hold at least 2 inches of oil, with at least 2 inches of clearance from the top of the pot. You also don't really need a candy thermometer, but it makes your life a lot easier if you've got one.

Emotions Digital Communications and Risky Decisions

Emotions Digital Communications and Risky Decisions

Brian Uzzi, Bin Liu, and Ramesh Govindan have conducted research on whether digital communications tell us something about our emotional state and the quality of our decision making.  They examined peoples electronic communications and tried to understand their emotional condition.   They wanted to know how emotions tied to decision making.  Here is what they found:

The researchers analyzed all 886,000 trade-related decisions and 1,234,822 IMs from 30 professional day traders over a two-year period. They also tracked each trader’s median daily profit—the best measure of trading performance. IMs were coded for level of emotion, based on the specific words used. For example, “nice,” “gold,” and “hit” were associated with moderate levels of emotion.

The study showed that traders were more likely to use IMs when making trades—meaning they were eager to talk about their risk-related decision—and that the emotion expressed in IMs correlated with profitability. As predicted, traders made the highest-quality decisions at a moderate level of emotional activation.

Excessive emotion is problematic. “If you’re over-activated, your emotional state is drawing cognitive resources away from the analytical brain,” Uzzi says. “You then fail to attend to the right information or your perception of the information becomes distorted.”

But perhaps surprisingly, zero emotion is also not ideal. “We show that unless you reach a certain level of emotionality, you can’t pull the trigger on the trade, and you don’t buy the stock at just the right time,” Uzzi says. The finding goes against conventional wisdom that an emotionless state—the proverbial poker face—is best for decision making in business. As the authors note, even Warren Buffett emphasizes controlling emotion in investing, rather than channeling the right amount of it.

Several points are worthy of emphasis here.  First, people do like to discuss situations with others before making risky choices.  Those discussions reveal something about their emotional state.  Second, removing all emotion from a decision - being "super rational" - is not the answer when it comes to improving the quality of choices we make.  Third, perhaps we can use various tools to monitor the emotional state of people tasked with making very risky decisions.   One tool might be an evaluation of key words used in their digital communications.

Echino Bag and Baby Booties

Echino Bag and Baby Booties

Echino Bag

Thank you a million for your lovely comments on the
birds + a teeny quilt block!! You know it makes your
day when something you thought didnt turn out great
gets so much compliments. I love it when that happens :)

I would like to share some projects I sewed up for my friend today.
My friend is expecting a baby boy, and she has asked me
to make a diaper bag and booties for him a while back.
She wanted this bag to have strong and long handles
and a zipper closure on top. I picked up Echino fabric
from my local fabric store because the quality of this
linen blend fabric is absolutely perfect for bag projects.
There was a day where Tokyo was hit by a crazy typhoon
last week, so that gave me a great reason to stay home
and cross off one thing from my never-ending make-to list.

Echino Bag

a2

a1

I came up with this bag pattern as I went. I would
make the outer bag, watch Kitchen Nightmare with Joe,
come back to made a lining, cook dinner, and come back
to sew up handles, etc. I didnt really make note of
anything about this pattern (measurements etc.) but
that was not the smartest decision, because I ended up
liking this bag a quite bit. I want to make one for myself too!

Baby Booties

And these are booties for my friends son-to-be!
She actually wanted booties to be matching with the bag,
but we both agreed that the Echino prints are a bit too
girly, so she let me use different fabrics for booties.
And ya, I know, the yellow ones arent so boyish,
so I am thinking about making one more pair of aqua +
green booties for him and the yellow ones are to go to my shop.

Baby Booties

The pattern is in a Japanese magazine, Cotton Time No.90.
Its not an easy and quick project, as it involves a lot
of hand-sewing, gathering, and sewing curves, but I think
the result pays off. Imagining my friend putting these
shoes on her first baby really got me excited!
I so wish I had my own ones to make baby stuff for (maybe
in a few years) Until then, Ill satisfy myself with
making baby things for my friends babies. way to go!

I will be back with Christmas blocks in a few days!

Thank you for stopping by! Hope you are enjoying the
beginning of Fall/Spring! I definitely am! No more
sweating all the time :)

Early Childhood and Marker Moments

Early Childhood and Marker Moments

Heres a situation: A child sees a large mountain of snow, is excited and wants to climb up. The child attempts, several times only to get stuck, make slow progress and then become frustrated. The child turns to the adult and asks for help, Saying "Please lift me up!"

It might seem like a simple request with a simple answer. In fact, a few years ago I wouldnt have thought twice and just lifted my child up, helping her to the top. Since then though, I am more thoughtful with requests like this. In the book Home Away From Home (Lifeways Care of Children and Families by Cynthia Aldinger and Mary OConnell) it reads "One of the cardinal rules is not to put a child into a position that she cannot get into herself. Better to let her struggle and strive until that special day when she can reach the first limb and pull herself up."
What once sounded somewhat cruel to me (watching a child struggle and fail) then made a little sense.

On this day I was fairly certain my own daughter was capable of climbing to the top of this snow mountain with a little persistence and work, so it wasnt too difficult to stand by and just encourage. But, it makes one think about those other times when a child asks to be put in a situation whether physical or psychological that the adult knows the child could not get into himself without adult interference. Many times we may be aware of the dangers of putting a child in a physical situation he or she could not reach independently, but just as importantly are those other situations we are tempted to rush them into when they are not ready.

Whether we are talking about a piece of playground equipment at the playground or a potentially stressful social situation, we as adults have to be able to know when our good intentions might not be what is best for a child. Dr. David Elkind coined the phrase "markers" to indicate significant accomplishments or the reaching of special events in the life of a child. When an adult interferes, in a way hurrying this process, something is lost. As is written in Home Away From Home "Immediate gratification eventually dampens, rather than deepens, joy in life."

In our "mountain of snow" situation I could tell by the look on my daughters face that she relished that moment of reaching the top by herself, and even more, sliding down and doing it again. This day was a good reminder of the importance of marker moments and the awareness I need to have for those big moments and the even the little ones.

Envelops and Mailbox Block for Ringo Pie

Envelops and Mailbox Block for Ringo Pie

My block ~ Ringo Pie Bee

Remember I told you that May is my month in Ringo Pie bee?
Seriously, you have no idea how excited I am about
receiving everyones blocks - 11 members besides me; therefore,
11 envelops/packages to come. Ever since I picked my theme which
is "Delivering letters and packages," I knew I was going to
paper-piece 11 envelops. My initial plan was to embroider
everyones initial on each envelop, but I wasnt sure if
I could pick the best envelop for everyone, so I decided not to.
Or in other words, I just got tired of working on this. lol

I used photoshop to design a simple envelop pattern,
and then picked 11 different solids that seemed to work
well together. Well, that may just have sounded an easy
step, but choosing 11 solids was one of the hardest part of
this project. Most of my craft projects are improvised;
I barely ever go fabric-shopping with any particular projects
in mind, but I couldnt be happy with my solids collection,
so I had a few trips to fabric stores to get just the right
solid. Yellow was the trickiest color. I ended up with
Kona corn yellow - what a lovely color it is!!

Choosing print cotton to match solids was easy and fun.
My favorite envelop might be the orange one with a
boy and girl. Isnt the vintage print super adorable?
Thank you so much erica for sharing me this beautiful fabric!

Another tricky part was this mail box, because it has curves!!
Yikes! In the past Ive always avoided paper-piecing anything
that has curves for Ringo Pie bee blocks, because I suck at curves.
But I took this opportunity to step outside my comfort zone to grow up.
And I am very happy I did, because it wasnt as difficult as
I expected and It was such a pleasure to know that I am
capable of tackling curves! well, not perfect like everyone
elses in Ringo Pie, but I think I will get better.
A positive attitude is indeed necessary when I sew.
Without it, I would be too overwhelmed to do anything.

Yes, this sewing blogland intimidates me too.
It has been sort of nice to read what people have
said recently about sewing blogland being intimidating.
I thought I was the only one who is terribly intimidated
and worried too much about presenting myself/my projects,
but clearly I am not alone. (a big sigh of relief.)

Its been hard for me too. I could have a
loooong post about my fears to blog/sew, but
I try to be optimistic. When I am too overwhelmed,
I get fresh air, go hiking, hang out with a hubby/friends
for some laugh, and eat really yummy stuff
until I am ready to have some fun again with sewing/blogging.

I am just grateful that there is anybody out there
who is willing to spare some time to stop by my blog,
read what I have to say, and leave me nice comments/emails
that constantly encourage me to keep
doing what Ive been doing.

Thank you SO much for allowing me to share my
projects here. Have a fabulous day!

ER Round 2 and other stuff

ER Round 2 and other stuff

Just five days after Olivers ER visit, we ended up having to bring Finley in. He whacked his head on the twirly thing at the park after soccer practice on Friday night. At dinner he told Jason his head felt really funny and then proceeded to throw up in the car on the way home. We took him to Urgent Care and they advised us to go to the hospital for a CT scan. Great.

The ER waiting room was filled with some really "interesting" folks that night. Like the man who had a huge gash on the side of his head. He was just sitting there casually chatting to the people across from him with no regard to the fact that there was blood dripping all over his face and clothes. Then there was the guy who came in completely hammered. Hed had a few several too many, gotten into a fight, and swore he broke his hand. He was moaning and yelling in the waiting room like he was about to give birth to triplets. The fabulous nurse came out to check his hand and said just loud enough for everyone to hear, "Im pretty sure its not broken." Awesome.

It turns out the Finleys noggin is just fine. It was a pretty quick ER visit and we made it home in time to get a little rest before Olivers last soccer game of the season.

A few bits of random:

I have received several questions about our raised beds lately so Im working on a post that goes a little more in depth about our gardens and how we built them. If you have a question youd like me to include, let me know.

Ive also received a bunch of inquiries as to Olivers Darth Vader freezer paper stencil shirt. Ill have a freezer paper tutorial later this week including a link to the coolest Star Wars stencils ever.

We managed to squeeze in a trip to see Round Trip: Art From the Boneyard Project at the Pima Air and Space Museum. Wow. So incredibly cool. Ill be sharing about that this week too.

Emotional Health Combatting Grief and Depression

Emotional Health Combatting Grief and Depression

Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) just recently hit the Philippines. Many have lost their homes, property, and worst, their loved ones.  Those people and almost everyone on this planet have or will experience grief and depression with the death of a loved one, a debilitating illness or injury, a divorce, or a catastrophic event.

Grief, according to the book 365 Health Hints, usually consists of five stages: shock, denial, anger, depression, and finally acceptance.  Recovery varies from person to person; it takes some people longer than others to recover, so grief shouldnt be ignored or rushed.

The following, continues the article, can help overcome grief:
  • Dont hide your emotions or feel embarrassed about grief.
  • Turn to supportive friends and family members for help and understanding.
  • Cope with anger over your loss by writing in a journal, pursuing a physical activity, or otherwise venting your feelings in a constructive way.
  • Substitute a positive thought for every negative thought that pops in your head.
  • Do not overeat or use alcohol and drugs in response to grief.
  • Be sure to eat a well-planned, nutritious diet and get enough rest and exercise, to boost your resistance to disease during your period of despair.
  • Avoid spending birthdays, holidays, or other momentous occasions alone.
  • Put off major decisions or changes until your grief has passed, since your judgment will be cloudy at this time.
  • To focus your attention away from yourself, do something to help someone else.
  • If you feel overwhelmed and unable to function, seek professional counselling.
Lastly, its best to keep in mind that whatever happens in our lives, happens for a reason. We may not know or see it yet, but each breath, each leaf that falls from a tree has a purpose.

Eurocrime! The Italian Cop and Gangster Films that Ruled the 70s

Eurocrime! The Italian Cop and Gangster Films that Ruled the 70s

Production Year: 2014
Release Date: 10/14/2014
Studio: Cinema Epoch
Director: Mike Malloy

There are documentaries...Then there are DOCUMENTARIES!  Eurocrime! is clearly the latter.  The love child of director Mike Malloy, the documentary explores the Italian crime films that were (mostly) predominate in the 70s.  The documentary is split up into several chapters, the first chapter delves into early Italian cinema and the habit of taking popular US trends and "making it their (the Italians) own."  In the 60s the Italians were fixated on westerns, but when the money for that fad began to dry up the new found popularity of films like The Godfather and Dirty Harry resulted in the creation of the poliziotteschi genre.  The rest as they say, "is history."

The film then dives into the very hectic social climate of Italy and how that played into the creation of the films.  During this time period violence was prominent; murder, kidnappings, and bombings were becoming the norm.  This was a theme that would typically play out in the 70s crime film.  Even some of the films crew were criminals!

From there the the film takes a look at the actors and the directors.  Thankfully a number of the more prominent poliziotteschi participants (try saying that three times fast!) were interviewed.  Their stories and anecdotes were all very colorful and painted a pretty clear portrait of an industry that was more concerned with getting the film made as quickly as possible than the safety and (occasionally) quality of the film.

One other important aspect of the documentary was the extreme violence featured in the poliziotteschi films.  It was as if each movie was trying to out do the last.  A chunk of time was spent on one memorable scene featured in 1974s Almost Human, apparently one extremely violent scene was so popular patrons would leave their film and sneak into the Almost Human auditorium just to see the violence on display.  These films were known for their sadistic violence, from genital mutilation to the killing of innocent children and Im glad Malloy made a point to spend a bit of time on that subject.

Overall Eurocrime! is a very satisfying watch, as someone whos a fan of these films I was extremely happy to see such effort put into glorifying a number of these underrated movies.  I was also pleasantly surprised with not just the number of interviews, but the amount of films covered.  Thanks to this film I have a lot of research and hunting to do.  This documentary is not to be missed!

Tomas Milian interview (14:57) - The first thing I noticed when watching Eurocrime! was the unfortunate lack of Tomas Milian.  It seems that Milian was not available for an interview during the films production.  Thankfully they were eventually able to get an interview and have included it as a special feature.  The actor discusses his career along with a number of the Italian crime films he was involved with.  The actor is just as colorful in the interview as he was in the films!

Deleted scenes (06:52) - Two deleted scenes are available, the first delves a bit deeper into the dubbing of the films.  The second scene is about the legacy of the Poliziotteschi, how now decades later the genre is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

Trailer (05:09)

Eurocrime! is the best film-related documentaries Ive seen since Not Quite Hollywood, its truly immense in its coverage going into great detail about not just the making of the films, but the social climate that helped shape the films.  This is a true must see for film fans!  I feel we all owe Mike Malloy a huge debt of gratitude for creating such an all-encompassing and entertaining documentary!
