Elearning Guild Webinar Enterprise Collaboration Are you envolved
Elearning Guild Webinar Enterprise Collaboration Are you envolved
So whats their story? First things first. What stops people from implementing social media?
- You build it, but people dont use it - 13%
- Execs dont buy -25%
- Unable to track
- Losing control -10%
- Dont know where to begin - 30%
The beginning of their journey
They took the right first step -- they didnt call it social networking. They called it enterprise collaboration. Good job! Social always throws up the wrong connotations. They were aiming to:- cultivate informal learning environment
- drive new levels of innovation
- allow collaboration
- create organisational memory
- supports accelerated pace of knowledge change
How they piloted
They piloted social media using ACES (Accelerated career excellence in sales) their career management program for sales staff - generally college graduates. Some stats:- 12 recent college graduates
- 12 mentors - 5 month mentor role
- 25 Program support associates
- 100 peer trainers
The tools they used
They used Sharepoint at ACES but they took it beyond being just a document repository. They seem to have pulled Sharepoint to its limits and made it work properly like a social networking application. The positioning was easy since it was only limited to the use of the program -- so that way they got over the get exec buyoff hurdle. How they took it to the next step
- Communities
- Associate Profiles
- Blogs
- Reporting
- Discussion Forums
- Search - without this I think any social platform is dead
What next?
They went ahead and combined the formal and informal elements of the course in one place using the Cornerstone LMS. To do this, they brought in their ACES program into Encompass - this way they were able to make the formal and informal learning elements operate and exist in the same context. How did they measure success?
They didnt have a clear definition of success, but they definitely knew that it could be valuable. But as they started to run reports they saw the levels of participation. In two weeks they had about 807 page views and a huge number of ratings -- so obviously there was a high level of participation to start with. So they asked themselves:- Did they need to play a more active role in the community? Community Management, listen, listen!
- How could they build additional informal learning activities?
- They started a blog asking people what they were learning. People started to respond and that set the snowball rolling.
- They started guiding activities such as putting up a video and then generating an activity from it.
- How could they leverage communication outside the platform to increase usage? They leveraged email to keep people connected into the informal learning platform. People are still bound to email -- you need to wean them off. No need to fight it.
- How would they define success? Their biggest parameter for success was usage and they started to restructure their platform to tune it to maximise usage. e.g. moving recent posts to the top of the page. The idea for them was to give people an ability to express themselves and as long as people could express themselves enough, they were happy.
Key Learnings
- Its ok to lose control - be flexible
- Understand your audience - each community is unique (as long as you dont create walled gardens IMO)
- They feel that program and project based communities can be a good place to start. Yes, as long as theyre open and accessible from one single entry point.
- Dont try to conquer the whole company -- small successes may actually create a bigger snowball. (makes sense -- again, Ill argue the openness)
I like the stuff these ladies are doing. Somethings I have a different take on, but in general, theyre on the right track. Good stuff. Im very sleepy and I know some of my writing may be disjointed - so pardon me for that. I guess late night gives me a bit of an excuse to be off colour.

either you have it or you dont
either you have it or you dont
Hi everyone! Im pleased to be creating my first post on academicsecret. My post is actually somewhat related to Mahoganys, in the sense that its about writing style/voice -- but rather than being about detecting an advisors voice, its about an advisor detecting mine.
I got the rather daunting news about a month or so ago that the style of my first dissertation chapter is not up to snuff, that it needs to be more exciting, punchy, vivacious; in short, my style needs to be more... stylish. (Im in literary criticism, so this matters, especially given the increased difficulty in getting literary studies published these days.) In the past Ive been told, by my advisor as well as others, that my work is well-written, so this hurt. But upon re-reading the chapter, I realized it was indeed rather boring. I was doing the thing I really hate when published critics do it: my topic sounded cool at first, but I wasnt engaging the reader.
Heres my secret fear: what if I dont have a style? This might sound ridiculous, but I really dont know if theres anything distinctive about my critical writing, and I have a lot of doubts about being able to develop a style at this stage in the game. At first I was upset with my advisor for not giving me any specific tips on how to develop a style, but then I thought about my own teaching and how difficult it is to help students develop a writing style. You can show them what defines other writers styles, and you can help them find topics that might tap into their voice, but its very difficult to teach style. Is style one of those "either you have it or you dont" things? And what if I just dont have it?

Facebook actively tracks you if you visit porn websites
Facebook actively tracks you if you visit porn websites
Did you know that Facebook actively tracks you if you visit porn websites?
If youre logged on Facebook and go on any adult entertainment website or shady porn website, chances are that the porn website has a Facebook plug-in button. This Facebook plug-in will actively track you down and know that your have been surfing porn.
Facebook tracks your surfing habits because the social networking giant collects data about the websites youre visiting so they can target the ads you see including your taste in porn.
According to their data policy, Facebook states:
We collect information when you visit or use third-party websites and apps that use our Services (like when they offer our Like button or Facebook Log In or use our measurement and advertising services).
This includes information about the websites and apps you visit, your use of our Services on those websites and apps, as well as information the developer or publisher of the app or website provides to you or us.Facebook Share and Like buttons actively track visitors visiting any website despite the fact that the social media network had promised these wouldnt be used to track its users seven years back.
Facebook wont use porn surfing habits to target you with sexual ads but the worrying thing is that Facebook will know exactly what you have been watching.
The only option left for you, if you are an avid porn fan, is to log out of Facebook and use VPN and/or Tor to surf such adult entertainments sites without the fear of tracking.

Exactly what happens when you experience a time mind sync warp
Exactly what happens when you experience a time mind sync warp
I teased you with the worst experience you can ever ... uh ... experience, and you demanded to know what happens next (by "you" I mean commenter Doug M.). So, enter the world of the time-mind sync-warp ... if you dare!!!!!
As "Anonymous" pointed out, first, Drax will "be assaulted by fists of shattered illusions and broken promises!"

Man, thats gotta suck.
But thats just the beginning! Sinister ghosts of past deeds and grim threatening spectres of future evils will then menace you! And youll be forced to relive over and over that time you dressed up as Carmen Miranda and pranced around the bedroom singing "Im A Little Teapot" just to see what it would feel like!

If you think the tough part is over, youre a fool! Not only will Thanos swallow you, but then he will create your prison, "and your prison is MADNESS!"

Luckily, it cant get much worse, can it? Well, only if you think this is better!

Remember: this story came out when Grant Morrison still thought "Sesame Street" was cutting-edge! Is this the weirdest page Marvel has ever published?
All this almost wipes out the psyche of Drax the Destroyer. Think of what it would do to your puny minds!

What have we learned? Dont piss off Thanos, obviously. And was Stan Lee just walking around the Bullpen handing out tabs of LSD? Now thats a workplace!
