Extreme Composition is Available as a Download
Extreme Composition is Available as a Download
I have been teaching Extreme Composition online a couple times a year now for about three years. Time to retire it, which means that now you can download all the content and have access to the videos. As I develop new online classes, Im retiring the old ones, making them available as downloadable self-study units.

I will be developing new online workshops, as youve seen. My Advanced Color Studies is full, but I plan to offer it again in the fall. Im trying to squeeze in an online workshop on Working in Black and White. My first offering of Monoprint Collage is coming to a close, and the next version is full. Ill try to offer that again before too long. Let me know if you have any suggestions for specific online workshops or downloadable content youd like me to offer.
Cheers. Thanks for visiting.

Excessive Talking as a Potential Methylphenidate Side Effect
Excessive Talking as a Potential Methylphenidate Side Effect
Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana) is one of the most common stimulant medications prescribed for ADHD. However, there have been several questions as to its side effects. Studies have been conducted on the effects of methylphenidate which include excessive talking, cardiac abnormalities, hallucinations, bruxism (teeth grinding), movement disorders, psychotic and manic-like symptoms, appetite suppression, and temporary weight and growth reduction.
Please note, however, that this list above is not meant to scare anyone off of this medication. While some side effects appear to be relatively common and well-grounded (such as appetite suppression and temporary growth impairment), many of these side effects are relatively rare, and the results are often based on isolated studies with poor reproducibility. To be fair, methylphenidate has been subject to a number of tests, with the vast majority supporting the claim that it is a relatively safe medication (provided one uses it appropriately as prescribed).
Furthermore, previous entries of this blog have dismissed the notion that methylphenidate carries an addiction potential on the level of cocaine or illegal amphetamines (a claim often erroneously made by many of the anti-medication crowd. Keep in mind that I personally do share many of the same concerns of these groups, but likening a controlled prescription drug with multiple addiction-reducing features to illegal street drugs is both irresponsible and does the overall argument on ADHD medication concerns a disservice in my opinion). Nevertheless, some of the above associations, while limited in scope and supporting data, do seem intriguing. For this post, I would like to briefly assess the results of the first unusual side effect of methylphenidate on the list, the surprising link between methylphenidate and excessive talking.
Before we proceed, we must bear in mind that this association is based on a single case report, and not a controlled clinical study. For those unfamiliar with the differences between the two, a case report is essentially a report of one (or a few) individuals, who exhibit particular symptoms, often in response to a particular medication or treatment strategy. While these reports lack the statistical power and overall scientific magnitude when compared to tightly-controlled clinical studies involving large sample sizes, we should not be quick to dismiss these findings. Individual anomalies, while often statistically small, do offer insight into some of the idiosyncrasies of medication and other forms of treatment, and involve real individuals (who are often in a more "natural" setting than those in clinical trials).
Given the recent advances in genetic studies and innovations in imaging and computational power, we appear to be at the dawn of a medical revolution, in which medication and treatment plans are becoming increasingly tailored towards individuals rather than groups or the general population. I personally believe that because of this general trend, individual case studies will begin to carry more weight and validity among the medical community than they have previously.
While not my intention to digress from the topic of todays post on methylphenidate and excessive talking, I did want to state some of the potential implications of the data accumulated from one particular individual. With regards to the study, here were some of the key findings and observations:
- The case involves a 5-year old Iranian boy who was prescribed methylphenidate (10 mg per day) for extreme hyperactivity and impulsive behavior, two key symptoms of ADHD. Treatment with this dose of methylphenidate produced significant improvements in both impulsivity and hyperactivity.
- Approximately 45 minutes after taking the medication, both parents and teacher reported a sharp increase in excessive talking. These results continued for 3-4 hours, which approximates the duration of effectiveness of methylphenidate (immediate release formula).
- Most interestingly, perhaps, was the apparently direct association between methylphenidate intake and hyper-talkative behavior. The study reported that methylphenidate treatment stopped and was reintroduced on over 20 different occasions within a 7 month period. In all 20 plus cases, the hyper-talkative behavior resumed when methylphenidate treatment was reintroduced. The magnitude of the difference, between talking behavior on and off the medication, while subjective, was significantly pronounced. On a 1-10 scale (done by parents and teachers, with 10 being the highest), the childs talking was around a 2-3 when off the medication and a 7-9 while on it. This extremely high frequency of association and pronounced behavioral differences between methylphenidate and excessive talking strongly attributes the abnormal behavior to the medication.
- The study gives several potential explanations for this association between behavior and medication. For example, methylphenidate, which regulates free dopamine levels and dopamine-related neural function, was shown to regulate word production in individuals with schizophrenia.
- Additionally, methylphenidate has been used to restore talking in patients treated with anesthesia.
- Finally, methylphenidate has been shown to effect the striatal region of the brain (see below, original file source here), which has a regulatory effect on cognitive motor functions, including talking patterns.
The striatum region of the brain (shown in green in the figure above), which has been shown to have a response to methylpenidate, and may be an underlying reason for the connection between methylphenidate and excessive talking. As mentioned above, we should obviously not put too much stock into one case study on the potential connection between the unusual side effect of excessive talking in response to methylphenidate. However, based on the severity and consistency of the association for the individual and the underlying theoretical basis of the association based on the results of other studies, we should not overlook the observations of this particular study. Furthermore, given the effectiveness of methylphenidate for reducing hyperactive and impulsive ADHD symptoms for this particular child, the fact that excessive talking behaviors (which can be a sign of ADHD-based impulse control problems) suggest the possibility that the methylphenidate treatment may have an effect on shifting the outward expression of symptoms of an underlying ADHD condition such as impulsivity. As a result, a number of questions should be raised on the basis of this study.

Easing Into 2013 Like a Hippo Into a Pool of Jelly
Easing Into 2013 Like a Hippo Into a Pool of Jelly
"You can see my front door from here!" I squealed.
Lydia and Lowri peered into the distance.
"And you can see your flat too, Lowri!"
We were standing on a terraced bit at the top of Lydias new block of flats, even though the many, many signs all told us very clearly that it was "Private Property" and most definitely "Not A Communal Area".
"Oh yes!" said Lowri. "There are the little white lines around its windows."
She squinted affectionately at the red brick monolith for a moment. "Look at its little eyebrows" she added.
Lydia took a thoughtful drag of her cigarette.
"We definitely have to do the yoghurt pots thing. We could easily get string between our three flats. Easily."
We had been drinking coffee at Lydias and had come out to scout the location for a filmette* were making for our next Eggs Collective outing to Mothers Ruin Theatrical Spectacular in February. This, we quickly decided, would be perfect, although from a slightly different position you would get B&M Bargains and Moss Side Leisure Centre in the background, which was unanimously agreed to be a good thing.
*definitely not a word
It was bloody freezing up there, though, so we didnt stay long. As we made our way back down the spiral stairs to Lydias flat we mused on the really important aspect of the performance: what to wear.
*****************************************
I came to a sad but definite conclusion this week: I should not be a Zumba teacher. This has little to do with my general lack of co-ordination/fitness/pep and a lot to do with my unfortunate tendency to go startlingly pink-faced at the merest whiff of cardiovascular activity. Every aerobics lesson I have ill-advisedly stumbled into has contained a bouncy, lycra-ridden instructor wearing some kind of bright pink endeavour. When I wore a bright pink top to a Zumba class last week I very quickly began to lose any t-shirt/face distinction. After a quick scan of the room I swiftly realized I was the only one suffering quite so dramatically from this affliction, even though Lydia was going through her own torment after receiving the wrong answer to the question "do you think therell be a fag break?".
Its a shame in a way, because I think I would enjoy being a Zumba teacher. As a Zumba teacher you can make whole rooms full of people do absolutely anything you like, including something called "The Rocking Horse" and some very dubious pelvic thrusting to MC Hammers Hammer Time.
I loved Zumba. Unlike normal aerobics where there is some kind of sadistic insistence on "getting it right", in Zumba you can just leap about and do what you want, as long as you dont get in the way of other leapers too much.
We are going again this week. I might wear a different coloured top.

Ben is going to Australia in a few weeks, touring festivals for two months with his show. Two months!
Two months.
I have a lot to do, and have made lots of plans. I am sort of excited to live on my own in my exciting city, close to friends, with loads of exciting performance and writing stuff in the pipeline. I am picturing myself as a sort of North-of-England, all-singing all-writing Carrie Bradshaw, only hopefully not as much of an unremitting dick.
Im excited for Ben. Im excited for me. But Im also sad for us both, because we like each other lots and I really sense that he thrives on having someone to cook dinner for.
******************************************
I havent been blogging because I have felt weird about it. I have been trying to be all Business about it and think of this blog as a Promotional Tool but when I try to write about career stuff here I feel like a massive tool myself, so I think Ill save that stuff for my website (HERE IS MY WEBSITE) and write on here about things that wander through my brain, aimless and bemused as a cow in Primark.
*******************************************
Oh, yeah, and happy new year. May 2013 be your year, you bloody gorgeous winner, you.

Exploratory Testing is a pleonasm
Exploratory Testing is a pleonasm
Its time to stop talking about Exploratory Testing as a subset of testing. There is no "exploratory testing" and "other testing". All testing is exploratory. If its not exploratory, its not testing.
Lets go back to Cem Kaners definition of software testing:
Testing is an empirical investigation conducted to provide stakeholders with information about the quality of the product or service under test.
Lets take the dictionary definition of "empirical" investigation:
Based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience" (Oxford English Dictionary)
Combine:
Testing is an investigation based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience conducted to provide stakeholders with information about the quality of the product or service under test.
What is exploratory testing?
"a style of software testing that emphasizes the personal freedom and responsibility of the individual tester to continually optimize the quality of his/her work by treating test-related learning, test design, test execution, and test result interpretation as mutually supportive activities that run in parallel throughout the project." - Cem Kaner
Or to put it a bit simpler: the simultaneous learning, design, and execution of tests. The design of the next test is based on the observations of the last test, and the experience the tester has accrued during the testing process.
Exploratory testing is the opposite of scripted testing. The design of scripted tests is not based on the outcome of the previous test. The design of scripted tests is not based on, or concerned with observation or experience. Writing and executing test scripts is not testing.
You could say: "oh, but while we are scripting, we have to explore the application so we know what to script." Correct. You are testing, and then scripting. Two separate activities.
"Oh, but we often deviate from the script if we notice something strange, or want to check something else." Correct. You are following a script, and then sometimes youre testing. Two separate activities.
Sometimes, the test script will be created using exploratory testing, and then will be executed with exploratory testing, and will be called scripted testing. This just highlights the fact that there is no scripted testing and exploratory testing. If youre testing, its exploratory. Its time to drop the "exploratory" from testing and time to drop the "testing" from scripted.
There is testing, and scripting. Dropping exploratory from testing means we dont need to justify what were talking about when we say "exploratory" testing, since most people, even other testers, are ignorant as to what that actually means. And it should highlight the fact that when you go to an ISTQB course, or even many conferences, there isnt actually much talk about how to test. And it should immediately nullify any attempt by ignorant testers who say "well, exploratory testing has good and bad sides" or "we dont do exploratory testing". It sounds much more obviously silly to say "well, testing has good and bad sides" or "we dont do testing."
Seriously, lets get down to what testing really means and begin teaching and talking about it, without the distraction of having to explain ET every time.

How can children learn a foreign language within half a year? And why does a regular person spend years of difficult studies on the same task? Its all because of a certain skill that children arent aware of, and adults have forgotten.
We all speak in our native language, perfectly. However, not all of us have received high grades during our mother tongue classes, in school. A language is an audio-visual dynamic environment of images. You can either imagine it as a system of rules and regulations, or you can jump into it as if you are entering a river. To learn it, is figuratively speaking, to learn how to swim. Once you have achieved the basics, you can learn the technical theory, and how to use it correctly.
Here are a few examples in which our system is especially efficient:
1. Learn basic phrases and vocabulary. Quickly and elegantly.
Without tedious study and repetition, you can learn basic vocabulary that will be sufficient in explaining oneself in public.
2. Begin hearing and understanding native speakers
You will no longer have to think long and hard before understanding what your conversation partner has just said. You will understand him naturally, as it happens to you in your own native language. Every word or phrase is pronounced by two narrators (male and female), who pronounce words in various intonations and speeds. From the very first moment, you will submerge yourself into the richness and variety of a new language.
3. Overcome your psychological barriers
A foreign language, will be perceived as pleasant and interesting, its study- fun and addictive. You will begin to see the results of your study quite quickly.
4. Learn how to study.
We are offering you to discover the skill, that which you already have, that helps you learn a new language as if you were in its natural spoken environment.
Moreover, we appeal to the experience that you once had when you were learning your mother tongue. We will assist you in remembering your feelings, and repeating them in a new language; in an aware state of mind, so that later you can use that skill independently.

Encounter With a Handkerchief
Encounter With a Handkerchief
You run into antique knitting in the darnedest places. At least, I do.
This morning I had a bit of an adventure. One of my friends here in Chicago teaches theatrical costume design, and was in need of a male fitting model for a class on pattern making. Would I be interested in the position, in exchange for the chance to audit the class?
This friend knows I have Sewing Envy, you see, and that pattern making is a skill I covet but dont possess. After a check of my travel schedule, I sent back an eager YES, PLEASE. So this morning, with notebook and pencils, I headed to the first meeting.
The costume shop was exactly what I expected it would be. Crowded. The arts never get enough space. Nor was it pretty in the conventional sense. Workrooms, except workrooms staged for display in craft magazines, seldom are.
Most of the floor was crammed with the requisite tables: high for cutting and pressing, lower for sitting and sewing. At the far end, costume sketches for the next production covered most of the wall. The other walls were stacked with supply bins: BRAID, BONE TAPE, HORSEHAIR, SNAPS. Two female forms, decked in day dresses in the style of the late Edwardian era, stood right and left like sentinels.
Again, not a conventionally pretty room. But if, like me, you love the possibility inherent in thread and snaps; and if, like me, you love to see the how behind beautiful things; it would be difficult to come up with a more fascinating space. I was so fascinated, in fact, that I forgot professional irons in a setting like this are usually a) always on and b) very hot. So I set my notebook on fire. But only a little bit. I dont think anybody noticed.
My friend is a top-notch teacher. The students had already been at work on their first pattern drafts (a female bodice, a skirt, a pair of womens trousers) and for the first hour of the class I watched him talk through each draft, making helpful suggestions and gentle, but firm, corrections.
It was difficult not to turn green with envy. Theyre all so young, these students. They have it all in front of them. They have so much opportunity, and so little responsibility. I had to battle a phalanx of If only... and Why didnt I? thoughts to keep my mind on the lesson.
Still, better late than never. Halfway through the second skirt draft I had my lightbulb moment. Ive tried to teach myself pattern drafting many times without success. SuddenlyZAP!the measurements connected to the drafting instructions connected to the lines on the paper. I was so happy I wanted to dance. But you cant dance in a room crowded with cutting tables unless you get up on one of the cutting tables, and as this was my first visit I was trying to play it cool.
Not long after, I noticed (over the teachers shoulder, at the far end of the room) a piece of fabric framed under glass. And even at thirty feet I recognized it as a handkerchief edged with knitted lace.
When we took a break, I made a beeline for it. Here are a few quick photographs made with my phone.
The framing job is, to be diplomatic, unfortunate. The handkerchief has been folded in four places to make it fit the frame, which is too small. There are neither spacers nor matte to give the textile room to breathe. The backing paper is probably not acid free, and neither is the label smashed between the glass and the edging. The acid in paper can, will, and does discolor fabric it touches. Also, I very much doubt the glass is treated to block out UV rays, which do nasty, nasty things to fiberespecially delicate fiber.
In other words, if you have such a treasure in your possession and you wish to frame it, this is an object lesson in what not to do. In other words, if you have such a treasure in your possession and you frame it like this, I will kick you in the nuts.
But enough griping. It was there, and it was gorgeous, and heres some more about it.
The work is super-fine. The fiber looks like cotton and is the weight of very fine sewing threadcloser to embroidery floss than, say, buttonhole twist. And the gauge is minute. I would venture to guess that the needles used would have been in the 000000 (thats six aughts) family.
The edge of the woven center was prepared with a rolled edge (in itself a feat of fine sewing) and the edging was then attached with tiny whip stitches in the same thread used for knitting. I cant help wondering whether the knitter made the center first and knit the edging to fit; or knit and blocked the edging and then sewed a center to fit. My guess is the latter, unless she was a masochist.
I also need to look at this again, closely and with more time, to try to find the start/end point. I tried for about three minutes, and couldnt. It might be buried under one of the folds. For a moment I wondered whether it might have been knit from the center outwards, but its clear from the grain of the fabric (mostly easiy visible in the plain garter stitch passages) that it was knit sideways, across the short width of the fabric.
One of the fascinating design choices is the corner treatments. Corners, as I always say in my Lace Edgings classes, can be tricky and deserve special attention. Usually, the trick is in making the continuous pattern swing attractively around the angle. Here, the knitter altered the pattern to suit the corners.
And while I dont love the sight of an acidic label snuggling a precious piece of knitting, I do love that there is, in fact, a label. Heres what it tells us, verbatim.
HANDKERCHIEF WAS MADE BY MRS. CONRAD PERRY, RIVERSIDE, TEXAS, AT THE AGE OF 76 YEARS, IN 1834. NUMBER 300 THREAD KNITTED ON SMALL STEEL NEEDLES, AND GIVEN TO THE WOODLAWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY ON AUGUST 20, 1941 BY MRS. LETTIE MC CLARY, FORMERLY OF 6328 KENWOOD AVENUE, NOW A GUEST IN THE EASTERN STAR HOME, ROCKFORD, ILL.
I raise my eyebrows at that date. But Mrs. Perry, I salute you. Your work humbles me. And Mrs. McClary, I thank you for preserving this for us to see. I pray your days at the Eastern Star Home were pleasant, and ended peacefully.
Speaking of Lace Edgings...
My first online class for Craftsy, "Heirloom Lace Edgings," will launch early next week. Its an action-packed course: we play with lace edgings that are sewn on, lace edgings that are knitted on, and lace edgings that are knit at the same time as the center they decorate. So many possibilities...
Watch this space (or my Twitter and/or Facebook feeds) for the announcement. I had an absolutely ball working with the Craftsy crew and staff to make it happen, and I hope youll enjoy taking it as much as I enjoyed making it. Heres an Official Photo of me on the set, looking all kinds of serious...with my beloved grandmother watching over my shoulder. She hated knitting, but I hope shed be proud.

Email phishing expertise Lack of skills or just a lackadaisical approach to security
Email phishing expertise Lack of skills or just a lackadaisical approach to security
I cant think of any current security test thats more important than email phishing. Yet, it seems that so few organizations actually include this phishing as part of their ongoing information security assessments and penetration tests. I suppose thats why we keep hearing about all of the Cryptolocker infections and crazy statistics being published by Verizon, Ponemon and others.
Here are some articles that I have written that can help you get your email phishing testing initiatives off the ground or, at least, provide you with some insight into why email phishing is such a big deal:
Defining Your Overarching Goal for Email Phishing Testing
What to include in an Exchange Server phishing test
Throw users a line to thwart an email phishing attack
Top Gotchas When Performing Email Phishing Tests
Stop attackers from catching you in a phishing hack
Minimize your online footprint to combat phishing
Use an enterprise phishing tool such as LUCY. Do it manually. Whatever the means just do it. I dont care how advanced your environment is or how mature your security program may be. Your network is one click away from compromise and you need to take the steps necessary to minimize this risk in your business. I promise you these tips that Ive written can help you fight this security threat but it has to be taken seriously.
